HPV stands for human papillomavirus. It’s a group of over 100 related viruses and the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Most sexually active people will encounter it at some point in their lives.
In many cases, the immune system clears the virus without any symptoms. But some strains persist and cause harm over time. High-risk types are linked to cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, penile, vulval, and vaginal cancers.
Low-risk strains tend to cause genital warts. These aren’t dangerous but can be uncomfortable and difficult to treat. HPV spreads through skin-to-skin contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
There's no treatment that clears HPV once you have it. Vaccination prevents infection before it takes hold. That's the only reliable way to avoid the cancers and conditions certain strains cause.
HPV is responsible for almost all cervical cancer cases in the UK. Around 850 women die from cervical cancer each year. Vaccination before exposure cuts that risk dramatically.
The NHS programme targets young people aged 11 to 13 through schools. Adults who missed that window, or who want protection for other reasons, can access the vaccine privately. We offer that service here in Brentwood.
At Ingrave Pharmacy, we offer Gardasil 9, currently the most protective HPV vaccine available. It targets nine strains of HPV, including types 16 and 18, which are responsible for most HPV-related cancers.
It also covers types 6 and 11, which cause around 90% of genital wart cases. Gardasil 9 is licensed for use in both males and females from age 9. It’s the same vaccine used in the NHS school programme.
Gardasil 9 contains virus-like particles (VLPs). These are not live viruses, so they can’t cause HPV infection. They replicate the outer surface of the nine HPV types the vaccine covers.
When injected, your immune system treats these particles as a threat. It builds antibodies in response. If you encounter the real virus later, your immune system already knows how to fight it.
Studies show Gardasil 9 reduces the risk of HPV 16 and 18-related cervical disease by over 90% in people not previously infected with those strains.
Most side effects are mild and pass within a day or two. They’re a normal sign that your immune system is responding.
Gardasil 9 offers protection against the following conditions caused by the HPV strains it covers:
