Why Flu and COVID Vaccines Matter

Flu and COVID are not mild seasonal illnesses for everyone. In the UK, influenza causes thousands of deaths in an average year, and COVID-19 continues to circulate with the potential to cause serious illness in vulnerable people.

Vaccination reduces your risk of hospitalisation and severe symptoms. It also reduces transmission to those around you who may be more vulnerable than you. Getting protected each season is one of the most practical steps you can take for your own health and your household’s.

Who Is Most at Risk from Influenza and COVID?

Certain groups are considerably more likely to experience serious complications from flu or COVID. These include adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, and people living with long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, COPD, asthma, or kidney disease.

People who are immunocompromised, whether from illness or treatment like chemotherapy, are also at high risk. Young children under two are particularly vulnerable to influenza. If you fall into any of these categories, annual vaccination is the recommended course of action from NHS clinical guidance.

Who Is Eligible for the Free NHS Flu Vaccination?

For NHS-funded COVID boosters, eligibility is reviewed seasonally by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation. Current guidance prioritises adults aged 75 and over, care home residents, and people aged 6 months to 74 who are immunocompromised.

Flu and COVID Vaccines We Offer at Ingrave Pharmacy

Flu Vaccine: Viatris Influvac

We use the Viatris Influvac vaccine at Ingrave Pharmacy. This is an inactivated influenza vaccine, meaning it contains no live virus. It works by prompting your immune system to produce antibodies against the flu strains most likely to circulate that season.

The formulation is updated every year based on World Health Organization recommendations. It takes around two weeks from vaccination to reach full effect. We carry it from September through January each year.

COVID Vaccines

For COVID vaccination, we currently offer three MHRA-approved vaccines:

All three work by training your immune system to recognise the spike protein on the COVID-19 virus. If you’ve received COVID vaccines previously, a seasonal booster helps maintain your protection as the virus continues to change. Our pharmacist or Independent Prescriber will advise which product is most appropriate based on your health history and any previous vaccines you’ve had.

Who Should and Shouldn't Get the Flu and COVID Vaccine?

Who should get vaccinated:

Most adults benefit from flu and COVID vaccination, particularly those in high-risk groups. If you’re over 65, pregnant, have a long-term health condition, or work in health and social care, vaccination is the standard recommendation. Healthy adults outside the eligible groups can still choose to vaccinate privately to reduce their own risk.

Who should not get vaccinated:

Do not receive the flu vaccine if you have a confirmed severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any of its ingredients, including egg proteins in some formulations. If you have a high fever on the day of your appointment, we’ll ask you to rebook once you’ve recovered.

Side Effects of Flu and COVID Vaccines

Side effects from both vaccines are common and usually mild. They indicate your immune system is building a response.

The most frequent reactions include a sore arm at the injection site, mild fatigue, headache, or a low-grade temperature in the day or two after your jab. These typically pass on their own within 48 hours. Serious reactions are rare.

Anaphylaxis is very uncommon but is a known risk with any vaccine. This is why we ask all patients to remain with us for approximately 15 minutes after administration. Our team is trained to recognise and manage allergic reactions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive my flu and COVID vaccines at the same appointment?

Yes, it’s safe to have both at the same visit. We can administer them together, saving you a second trip to the pharmacy this season.

Every year. Flu strains change each season, so last year’s vaccine may not protect you from the current circulating strains. Annual vaccination is recommended for all eligible groups.

Bring your NHS number if claiming a free vaccine, and wear clothing with easy access to your upper arm. Please mention any known allergies or previous vaccine reactions when you arrive.

Yes. Strain formulations are standardised across all UK providers each year. We use Viatris Influvac, an MHRA-approved inactivated flu vaccine widely used across the NHS and private sector.

Most medications don’t affect vaccination. If you take blood thinners or immunosuppressants, mention them when you arrive. Our pharmacist will review your medication before proceeding with any vaccine.
