When You Might Want to Delay Your Period

There’s no single reason women use this service. Some of the most common situations we see include:

Period Delay Tablets We Offer at Ingrave Pharmacy

We prescribe norethisterone for period delay. It’s the standard medication used across the UK for this purpose and has a well-established safety record when used short-term in suitable patients.

Your prescriber will confirm the dose and duration based on your needs and medical history.

How Norethisterone Work

Norethisterone is a synthetic form of progesterone. During a normal cycle, progesterone levels drop, which triggers the start of your period. Taking norethisterone keeps those levels elevated artificially, which delays the shedding of the womb lining.

You take the tablets three times a day, starting three to four days before your period is expected. Your period will typically arrive two to three days after you stop taking the course.

It’s worth being clear: norethisterone is not a contraceptive. It won’t protect against pregnancy.

How Long Can You Delay Your Period?

Most women delay their period for between 10 and 17 days. You can take norethisterone for up to 20 days, though your prescriber will advise what's appropriate in your case. The longer you take it, the heavier your period may be when it returns. It's something worth factoring into your plans.

Side Effects of Period Delay Medication

Norethisterone is well tolerated by most women, but it can cause side effects. The most commonly reported ones are:

Norethisterone is suitable for many women, but not all. Your prescriber will need to know about:

What a friendly and helpful chemists. Telephoned them. Needed an urgent flu jab. Told to come down any time. 2 minute journey and walked through the door. The staff were friendly and the jab was painless. We are losing our real local community chemists and so if you live local use it or lose it. 👍👍👍
